1) It Contains Omega-3 Acids
Omega-3 fatty acids are one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century. They have such an amazing impact on a person’s health simply by reducing inflammation. There is a particular biochemical pathway that stimulates inflammation in the body and the results are generally pain, swelling etc. But inflammation, even at a low grade over a long period of time, can lead to the development of conditions like:

  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Brain degeneration

Simply by interacting with this biochemical pathway and being so efficient at it, omega-3s have really changed the health outlook of certain people who take it every day. Omega-3 fatty acids can be obtained from fish like salmon, herring, sardine and tuna. Since some people aren’t inclined to eat fish every day there are also supplements that can be taken to make sure that people get their daily dose. 2)Fish Is A Source Of Vitamin D
Almost everyone knows that if you need a little bit more vitamin D you can go outside and catch some sun rays. But there are also dietary sources of vitamin D and these at a lot quicker because they don’t need to be produced in the skin. Interestingly enough as much as 41% of Americans are deficient in vitamin D.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin and is found mostly in the same fish that give a fair amount of omega-3 fatty acids. The function of vitamin D is to maintain a fine balance between calcium and phosphorus in the body which controls how strong our bones are but even more importantly how our hearts contract. So eating these fish is a double bonus because of the two protective effects it has on the heart.

3)Fish Is High In Protein But Lower In Bad Fats
It might be hard to believe but certain fish species (like salmon) are only 12% fat. Some species can be up to 50% but the majority of these are not bad fats, and actually are important to our health (like omega-3 fatty acids). They are also quite high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Proteins are necessary for just about any function in the body, and eating foods that are high in protein but low in carbohydrates help to streamline metabolism to produce energy more efficiently and reduce the storage of fat. Of course, proteins also help to build muscle.

4)Fish Is High In Iodine
Fish contains many trace elements but one of the most important is iodine. Iodine forms an important part of a particular hormone in the body called thyroxine. Thyroxine is released from the thyroid gland and plays an important role in speeding up the metabolism and maintaining body temperature. A deficiency of iodine can cause a condition known as hypothyroidism where the thyroid gland does not produce enough of the hormone. This can lead to excessive storage of fat, always feeling cold, often feeling tired, etc. There actually aren’t that many sources of iodine in the human diet so fish are actually highly appreciated in this regard.

5)It’s Just Tasty!
There are thousands and thousands of ways to prepare fish. There are also several types of fish that can be used in different kinds of dishes. Fish generally tend to hold onto spices and flavors that it is cooked with which can make it an incredibly tasty source of nutrients. It’s difficult to think of another food that contains so many nutrients and gives so many health benefits, but at the same time tastes so delicious. With all the different and delicious ways to prepare it, it is easily possible to eat fish only once or twice a week which is all that is needed to get these health benefits.
