What you should totally eat when you are in Penang – Malaysia Blog – Food in Penang

Everyone who travels to Malaysia are always encouraged to visit Penang, a little state up north. Why you would ask? You see, Penang is what Malaysians would call, an all rounded state, packed with the goodness of culture, perfect mix of race and ethnicity and activities that caters for everyone from every walk of life. But if you are a foodie like I am, Penang is the place to place to be to taste all the goodness Malaysia has to offer. You will find Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, Western and everything in between, all serving up unique twists on the classics, as well as more innovative fusion dishes.

So for all Penang newbies out there, here is a list of what you have to eat, like totally have to for your first time in Penang.

Char Koay Teow (Fried Noodles)
This is one of the most iconic food in Penang and you can find it almost everywhere you go. This mouth-watering mix is made by frying the noodles in hot oil with light and dark soy sauce, prawns, cockles, sausages (optional) , crispy bean sprouts, fluffy egg and a hint of chili, and usually served on a banana leaf. This rich and taste filled concoction will surely leave you wanting more.

Oyster Omelette
The Oyster Omelette is a culinary delight amongst street foods in Penang and is loved by those who don’t even favour oysters. The oysters are fried in an egg and rice flour batter (to make it nice and crispy) with chives. It is then eaten by dipping it in a spicy chili or garlic sauce. One bite and you will be able to taste the burst of flavours in this fluffy omelette.

Curry Mee (spicy Coconut Noodle Soup)
This dish is a soup formed with a combination of curry and coconut milk, usually eaten with yellow noodles or vermicelli accompanied by fried bean curd, cockles, prawns, cuttlefish, and bean sprouts. The coconut milk in the curry makes it a perfect combination of spicy but not the kind that tears your tongue apart but the kind that makes you day a whole lot better.

Crispy Duck with Rice
With the Chinese having such influence in Malaysia there is no surprise that Crispy Duck is on the menu everywhere. And it’s a serving of delicious. The duck is basted in a sweet and spicy sauce and often served alongside boiled rice and chives. Look out for places that hang multiple ducks in the window with a line, a sure sign that the restaurant is popular.

Asam Laksa (Rice Noodles in fishy Soup)
In Penang, this would be its most famous dish and you wouldn’t believe it but is rated 7/100 in the world’s top food. Once you taste it, you won’t deny it. Asam Laksa is a rich-based noodle soup eaten with think rice noodles, herbal broth, chili paste, lemongrass, shrimp paste and mackerel. The base is made from tamarind so it packs a whole lot of sour taste to it, so be ready to be awaken.

Teo Chew Cendol (Cold Dessert Soup)
This interesting concoction consists of a bowl of shaved ice filled with chewy green rice flour jelly, red kidney beans, fresh light coconut milk and then sweetened with a splash of gula Melaka (brown sugar) syrup. The perfect dessert on a hot, sunny day to totally cool you down.
