Eyebrows are one of the most important features of the face, providing a frame to the eyes and balance to the features. For many individuals who have naturally small brows, have over-plucked their brows resulting in permanent hair loss, or who otherwise suffer from sparse eyebrow hair, an eyebrow transplant can provide a permanent, beautiful solution to reframe the face.
Today’s techniques in eyebrow transplantation can yield flawless results when wielded by an expert surgeon. However, there are some key styling tips that will help you keep your brows looking their best after your eyebrow transplant.
Why to trim
When the surgeon performs your eyebrow transplant, he uses hairs taken from the back of the head, where a donor site will be easily hidden by the rest of the hair. When these hairs are transplanted to create your new brows, they maintain some characteristics of the hair on your head.
Normal eyebrow hairs have a shorter growth cycle than hairs from the scalp, so prior to your eyebrow transplant you might not have needed to trim your brows regularly. During the transplant, the surgeon will harvest hairs from your scalp, and will carefully implant them in the eyebrow area, taking into account the direction of hair growth and the natural bend in the transplanted scalp hairs. These donor hairs are microscopically separated and implanted into individual incisions in the brow area, resulting in a natural-looking restoration.
The implanted hairs typically fall out within a month or two of the transplant, and the grafted follicles will subsequently enter a new growth cycle. When the newly transplanted hairs begin to regrow, they will continue to grow as they did on the scalp. This means that regular trimming will be necessary to keep your eyebrows looking their best. The transplanted hairs may take several months to begin regrowth, so it may be up to 6 months to a year before you need to begin regularly trimming.
Over time, the hairs that have been transplanted in the brow area may gradually begin to take on some characteristics of natural brow hair, reducing their growth phase and requiring less frequent trimming. However, some or all of the transplanted hairs may retain the longer growth phase, meaning that trimming your brows may be something that you will need to incorporate into your routine on a permanent basis.
When and how to trim
Keeping your new eyebrows well-groomed is easier than you might think! A small pair of trimming scissors and an eyebrow comb can be used to evenly trim the brows whenever needed. Using the eyebrow comb to lift your brow hairs away from the face, make small trims with the scissors, then comb smooth to check the new length. Trim further as desired to create a fuller or more trim brow profile. The frequency of required trimming will depend on how quickly your new brow hairs grow.
If you aren’t comfortable trimming your own brows with scissors, an electric trimmer with a preset length setting can be a good option with little opportunity for error in trimming. Or, for the ultimate grooming experience, consider having your brows professionally trimmed to maintain a perfect shape.
While plucking an occasional stray brow hair after your transplant should not cause issues, be extremely careful not to remove any of your transplanted hairs unless you are certain about the removal. The transplanted follicles may be sensitive to plucking, and removing them might lead to permanent loss, requiring a new transplant to correct.
Other styling tips
After about a year, your post-transplant brows will have fully regrown. Your new, fuller brows can be styled just like natural brows.
In addition to regular trimming, you may wish to make use of brow gel to ensure your new brows maintain the ideal shape. This can be especially helpful during the initial growth phase, and can help train your new hairs to grow perfectly in line with your brow arch.
If you enjoy the look of eyebrow pencil or brow pomade, feel free to use as you would on all-natural eyebrows. Your newly transplanted brows will add a beautiful frame to your face that will last for a lifetime.
