This campaign was designed to provide awareness to students and the general public on creative ways to practise sustainable lifestyle in line with the goal to promote healthy ecosystem and biodiversity. Invited speakers, Rebecca Yau and Benjamin Ang from Ekha Langkawi, demonstrated and engaged with the audience creative ways to turn waste into sustainable fashion.

The event’s grand finale was a fashion catwalk by UPM students and guests who showcased trendy upcycled handbags by Ekha Langkawi. The campaign coincided with the launch of the newly established IPRMSA-UPM chapter, which aims to provide students with hands-on experience in public relations management and a platform for networking with industry players. This club consists of UPM’s Bachelor of Communication students from the Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication (FBMK). The idea to create awareness and appreciation for sustainable fashion came about based on a realisation of thrift shopping becoming a mainstream trend in Malaysia, especially among the Generation Z. Essentially, thrift shopping for Generation Z means buying value-for-money outfits and other goods, but the campaign aimed to raise awareness and encourage youths that they are not only saving money but also practicing environmental stewardship. Rebecca Yau, Ekha Langkawi believed that practising sustainability in fashion should be practised in a fun way. At the forum, she further elaborated that upcycling materials into fashionable items is a fun activity that everyone can easily incorporate into their lifestyle. Her upcycled products are trendy and practical as they are water-proof and durable.

The initiative of the campaign is in line with the United Nation’s 12th Sustainable Development Goals of responsible consumption and production. Associate Professor Dr. Nurul Ain Mohd Hasan, the Advisor of IPRMSA-UPM, a senior lecturer of the Communication Department, FBMK, and a member of IPRM, said that “The campaign is hoped to provide inspiration and encouragement for sustainable lifestyle among youths.
