As the largest city on the Costa del Sol, Malaga is regarded by some as a quite a commercial holiday destination, which is only frequented by tourists interested in sun, sea and sand. However, there is more than meets the eye to this particular region of Spain.
In fact, Malaga boasts attractions and activities that would astound any traveller. For that reason, it deserves to be an essential item on anybody’s bucket list.
So, if you’re interested in visiting Malaga sooner rather than later, here is what you can expect and experience.
History and culture
Perhaps best known as the birthplace
From a cultural perspective, Malaga comes up trumps once again. The Contemporary Art Centre showcases the work of famous Spanish artists while the 19th-century La Concepción Botanic Garden features peaceful lakes, sub-tropical plants and a lush green forest.
Food and drink
One of the reasons why people fly out to Spain is an ever-present feature on several people’s bucket list is because of the food and drink. Thankfully, Malaga delivers a range of traditional and contemporary cuisine, which satisfies the taste buds but leaves you craving more.
The tapas are bound to be one of your priorities, so join the locals at a long established bar and sample whatever they happen to be eating. Gastropubs, five-star dining and casual chiringuitos (beach bars) will also fulfil your Spanish cuisine cravings. Just make sure you wash it all down with a microbrewery beer or some of Malaga’s vino dulce (sweet wine).
Going out and socialising
Despite the fact that Malaga opens up the door for culture vultures and food aficionados to indulge in their favourite pastimes, this understated city allows anyone to let their hair down in the evening as well.
From a few drinks in a bar to partying until the early hours, going out and socialising in Malaga is sure to leave you with memories you’ll never forget. After-dinner drinks can be enjoyed around Comedias and Alcazabilla, while Plaza de Uncibay and Plaza de la Merced come alive at night.
So although Malaga might be perpetually popular among package deal holidaymakers, it should also be considered a once in a lifetime destination too.
