When you first visit a country, it can be overwhelming to work out what is best to experience in a short amount of time. Here are a few recommended destinations to try for the first time.
Every country is different and when you visit for the first time it can be overwhelming. Between not knowing the language and feeling lost, it is best to plan your holiday a bit before arriving in a new destination. Although, it can be difficult to know what is going to be enjoyable, Turkey is filled with historical significance. Turkey is also famous for its beautiful landscapes and beaches. Here are a few suggestions that offer an experience sure to make your next holiday special.
Ephesus
The ancient city of Ephesus has stood for generations and has been inhabited by many different cultures. Starting off as a Hittite area, it eventually became a major place for Greeks to settle. One of the seven wonders of the ancient world is the Temple of Artemis. Alongside the temple, there was also the Library of Celsus and a theatre that could hold 25,000 spectators. While the city now stands in ruin, there are still some buildings that maintained their original structure and easily demonstrate what they once looked like. The Library of Celsus is a perfect example, its interior was destroyed by an earthquake and a fire during a Gothic invasion. During the same period, the facade of the building was maintained as a reminder. However, this facade was also destroyed later and since then archaeologists have rebuilt the facade in honour of the ancient peoples of the city.
Ephesus is an absolute must when visiting Turkey. Walking around this city that although lies in ruin, conveys what life was once like, is a truly unique experience. Even more interesting, there are archaeological excavations still happening that lead to new discoveries every year.
Fethiye
Fethiye is a bustling harbour town that has become a hub for both tourism as well as the boating industry. In this town, there are many places to see and things to do. A wonderful mix of modern tourism and old Turkish way of life can be seen in the area known as the Paspatur. These narrow streets keep the traditional style of buildings but have shops and high-quality restaurants making for an interesting walk while picking up sought-after Turkish souvenirs.
The harbour that Fethiye is famous for is also the home for many different types of boats and cruises run by sail turkey. These types of journeys usually depart from Fethiye harbour, heading to unforgettable destinations along the Turkish coastline.
Olympos
This ancient city and backpackers village have an unusual popularity. The ruins are famous for the temples to various gods including one Egyptian god. The land around this ancient site is protected meaning no permanent structures are allowed to be built. However, there is an exception the tree house hotels. This unique accommodation is built with nature in mind – wooden bungalows both on the ground and built up into the trees. Olympos is not only famous as a ancient city, it is also well-known for the Chimera flames. At the top of a small peak nearby is a natural gas vein that is self-igniting and has been burning for generations. This natural phenomenon has been a benefit to sailors of the time which used the flames to direct them away from the rocky shores. The famous Greek writer Homer also wrote about the creature Chimera and it has been attributed to these flames as his inspiration.
At the base of this hill is the Temple of Hephaestus. In this case, the god is depicting fire but Hephaestus is also the god of blacksmithing, crafting and volcanoes. The temple, like the rest of the ancient city of Olympos, lies in ruins but can be enjoyed for its beauty and historical significance.
Here are only three places that are recommended to visit during your first holiday to Turkey. Some require travel but the journey to these destinations often make the experience even more special. Traveling by gulet cruise or bus shows how beautiful this country is even when there is nothing to do but look at the scenery passing by. So why not visit?
