8 Things That Will Surely Damage Your Expensive Fur Coat (How to Avoid Them) – Dubai blog

A lot of people get allured by the thought of owning an expensive fur coat. However, they often lack the knowledge on how to take care of their expensive fur coats and end up damaging them in the process. If properly maintained, fur coats can last several lifetimes and they are often passed down to the next generation.

While there are several fur coat maintenance blogs and videos out there, in this post we focus on things that you should never do. Committing these fur coat maintenance mistakes may end up destroying your precious fur coat.

Without further ado, the following are 8 things that can ruin your expensive fur coat.

Exposing Your Fur Coat to Unrecommended Sprays and Chemicals

Stores that offer women’s fur coats for sale often include instructions on how to take care of the coat. Amongst the many care tips, it’s often recommended to avoid using chemical cleaners or hair sprays on the product.

If you want to clean your fur coat, use a recommended brush or simply take it to a professional cleaner. Most fur stores that sell new coats also offer cleaning and repairing services.

Using a Hair Dryer to Dry a Soaked Fur Coat

Memorize these wise words, “heat is the enemy of my fur coat.” This means if your fur coat gets wet you should never use a hair dryer to speed up the drying process. The extreme heat can damage the delicate fur and leave it coarse and dry. Hair dryers also damage the leather underneath the fur and may cause it to develop flakes.

So, what happens if your coat gets wet? First, stop panicking. Now that you are calm, shake the coat gently to shed the moisture. Don’t try to crumple or crush your coat in order to squeeze out more moisture. Place the coat in a well-ventilated and dry room. Allow the coat to air dry, without subjecting it to heat.

Not Getting It Professionally Maintained

Fur coats need to be cleaned and conditioned using delicate techniques. Proper cleaning prevents coats from drying out, which can cause irreparable damage.

Instead of trying to clean the coat yourself, take your fur jacket or coat to a professional cleaner specialized in handling fur. Make sure to get your fur cleaned at least once every year.

Using a Plastic Bag or a Garment Bag Made from Plastic to Store Your Fur

Fur coats need proper air flow to retain its delicate moisture balance. A lot of people store their fur coats in plastic bags or garment bags that are not breathable. This is a grave mistake and can ruin the feel of your coat in one season.

Use the breathable cloth bag provided to you by the fur shop to store your coat. If you don’t have one, buy any suit or blazer bag that has pores to promote breathability.

Spraying Perfume for Getting Rid of that Musty Smell

If the fur coat you bought online starts to smell, it’s time to take it to a professional cleaner. Fur coat cleaners use special cleaning agents to deodorize your fur coat.

The last thing you should be doing is spraying perfume on your coat to get rid of that closet smell. Once sprayed, the smell of the perfume can be pretty difficult to get rid of.

Wearing a Heavy Shoulder Bag While Wearing Your Coat

Carrying a matching handbag is fine, but make sure not to carry a heavy shoulder bag when wearing your fur coat. The straps of the bag may put a lot of pressure in a small area of the coat. Overtime, the habit of carrying a shoulder bag may cause localized balding of the fur coat.

Storing Your Fur Coats in the Basement

A lot of people store their fur coats in the basement in order to keep them in a cool area. While there is no denying that basements remain naturally cooler than the rest of the home, they also have a higher humidity level. The excess humidity damages the fur coat and causes it to develop a funky smell.

If you have to store your fur coat in the basement, it makes sense to keep a dehumidifier. Or else simply store the coat inside a cool and dry closet.

Using Mothballs

Mothballs or naphthalene balls have a typical smell that can get absorbed by the coat. The chemical smell of mothballs can be really tough to remove.

Your only real option is to take your fur coat to a professional cleaner.
