When it comes to must see attractions and tourist destinations in Asia, Penang Malaysia have plenty to offer. Penang has lots of must see temples, museums, ruins, preserved forests, beautiful beaches and other spectacular places that are truly amazing and enchanting. I visited some of them and I can truly say that it’s totally worth the effort, time and money to visit such fascinating places.

Penang Hill or Flagstaff Hill (Bukit Bendera)

Penang Hill is located on the northern sector of the island. It is one of Malaysia’s oldest hill resorts and arguably one of the island’s most popular destinations. Penang Hill rises 821 meters above sea level. Aside from the cool and relaxing atmosphere, it also provides the visitors with breathtaking 360 degree panoramic view of the whole island.

To reach the summit of Penang Hill, you can ride their train that travels all the way up for 30 minutes. The highlights of the peak include a Hindu temple, church, mosque and snake show. If you love nature trails and fond of the exotic animal life, you will enjoy this destination.

Kek Lok Si Temple

Kek Lo Si Temple is one of the largest Buddhist temple complexes in Southeast Asia. It stands on top of a hill and was founded more than hundred years ago.  The whole complex is filled with beautiful gardens with amazing colorful flowers and sacred enchanting temples. A collection of Buddha statues made from precious materials can also be found at this temple complex. It also features the statues of The Four Heavenly Kings that guards the four points of compass – North, South, West and East with the statue of Laughing Buddha placed in the middle.

Fort Cornwallis

One of the best Penang landmarks is Fort Cornwallis. Inside its ten-foot-high walls, you will be able to see Penang’s first chapel (built in 1799), old prison cells, ammunition storage area and even vintage bronze cannons including Seri Rambai which is known as a fertility symbol.

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion is one of Penang’s best-known attractions. This must visit place was built in the 1880s when Hakka merchant, Cheong Fatt Tze commissioned its construction. The Mansion is highlighted in various TV programs such as The History Channel and Discovery Travel & Living. It is the winner of the 2000 UNESCO Most Excellent’ Heritage Conservation Award and the 2008 Best of Malaysia Travel Award’s ‘Best Boutique Hotel’ by Expatriate Lifestyle magazine.

Kapitan Keling Mosque

Kapitan Keling Mosque is Penang’s first-ever mosque built in the 19th century. It is the largest and one of the oldest mosques in town. This mosque named after the ‘kapitan’ of the Keling (a leader of the South Indian community back then), Cauder Mydin Merican. If you wish to visit this historical place, you have to get permission from the mosque officials first. Also, visitors are required to wear proper or decent attire before entering the mosque.

Kuan Yin Temple

Kuan Yin Temple is Penang’s oldest temple. It was built in the early 1800s in honor of the Chinese Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin).  It features a classic Chinese architectural style, with stone carvings of dragons around the stone pillars, high ceilings and ceramic sculptures of dragons lining the roof ridges. Some locals also call this temple as ‘The Goddess of Mercy Temple’.

Penang Khoo Khongsi

Penang Khoo Kongsi is one of Georgetown’s most interesting destinations. It is one of Penang’s most lavishly decorated kongsis that was built 650 years ago. Penang Khoo Kongsi is a part of the ‘Goh Tai Seh’ (five big clans) that formed the backbone of the Hokkien community in olden-days Penang. This is considered as the most famous clan house in Penang.
