Achieving the perfect summer glow is one of the perks about living in a sunny region during the summer. However, there are all kinds of negative effects to exposing your skin to harmful UV light, whether it comes from the sun’s rays or a sunbed. Self-tanners are a great alternative because you can apply them yourself and get that bronzed look without putting your skin at risk of sunburn. Here are five rules that everyone should know and follow when using these products.
1. Do Everything Else You Need to First
You still need to take great care of your skin, so make sure you do everything you need to first, including exfoliation and moisturizing. If you need to shave or wax any areas before applying the product, do so, then wait at least 24 hours before using it. When exfoliating, use a body polish or scrub to get rid of any dead skin cells. This creates a smoother canvas to help achieve an even color all over your body.
2. Use Tanner With a Low Percentage of DHA
Self-tanning products usually contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA). This is what reacts with the topmost skin layer causing it to tan. Different products have different DHA saturations. Most of the time if skin ends up an orange color, it is because the DHA saturation in the tanning lotion was too high. Everyone’s skin is different, so the saturation level that works for you might not necessarily work for someone else. It’s a great idea to start off with a product that contains low saturation levels of DHA, then slowly build the color. Self-tanners that contain green pigment can also help to counteract orange coloring.
3. Take It Slow
Many individuals can get away with slathering loads of self-tanner on at a time, but it’s safer to take it slow. When you’re unsure about the DHA saturation, start off by applying a small amount in an inconspicuous area. If it looks all right, then you can move to more conspicuous areas of your body. You will likely end up using a lot of the product, but as you figure out which ones work for you, you may be able to perform subsequent applications with less generous amounts. Just start out slow so that you don’t end up resembling an orange!
4. Protect Your Hands and Hair
The telltale sign of a self-tanner is discolored hands. While there’s no shame in using a self-tanning product, you probably want to keep your hands their natural color. Invest in a mitt to protect the hands when applying the product. Most can be easily washed in a sink or washing machine.
Self-tanner can also affect the hairline and change the color of your hair. To avoid this, use a hairnet to protect your hairline. You can then slowly work the line to make the tan look more natural without ruining your hair color.
5. Keep Sunscreen Handy
While you might think that a self-tanning product protects your skin, this is false. It is still important to apply sunscreen every day before going outside to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. You can still get burned even when your skin has a bronzed appearance. So make sure you have plenty of sunscreen on whenever you go out.
Everything in Moderation
As with any cosmetic product, it’s important to use the self-tanner in moderation. If you follow these tips, you should have an easy time figuring out which product works for you and how best to apply it. That sun-kissed look will have you summer ready in no time.

thanks rosey!
Omg I’m all about a good sunless tan but ughh… Swear it’s impossible to keep your hands looking good! Cover them they end up white, let tanning stuff touch and ughh…. Still worth it to me though 😉

These are great tips. I have never used a self tanner, but think they are much safer than tanning beds!
